DESCRIPTIONAmantadine belongs to a class of drugs known as antivirals, although depending on how its used, it might be classified as an antifatigue or antishaking drug. CAUTIONS

Avoid getting up quickly from a sitting or lying down position when using this drug. If dizziness or lightheadedness occurs, notify your doctor. Blurred vision or reduced concentration may also occur.
There have been a number of studies evaluating the use of Symmetrel for cocaine addiction, all with variable results. In one study, 42 people were chosen to receive it or placebo for 10.5 days. Through one month, more amantadine-treated patients had urine samples that tested negative for cocaine. In another study, patients were chosen to receive a higher dose of amantadine or placebo for four weeks, in addition to psychosocial care. Results from this study showed no significant differences between conditions for urine drug testing, self-report of drug use, retention, craving, or global improvement.
Researchers at the Friends Research Institute in Los Angeles, California, evaluated Symmetrel twice daily for cocaine dependence. In this 16-week trial with group counseling included, patients received Symmetrel or placebo. Researchers found that amantadine-treated patients were more likely to not use cocaine on the last day of the eight-week study compared with those patients who received placebo. These findings were similar at the end of the study (at week 16).
