DESCRIPTION
Azathioprine belongs to a class of drugs known as immunosuppressives (decrease immune activity) usually prescribed to prevent rejection of transplanted organs and in rheumatoid arthritis. The use of Imuran may decrease proliferation of immune cells, thus reducing autoimmune activity (body's attack of its own tissues). Side effects include increased chances of infections, hair loss, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, discolored urine and stool, fever, chills, sore throat, low back pain, and joint pain.

Azathioprine is used in combination therapy to prevent the rejection of kidney transplant, to treat severe active rheumatoid arthritis unresponsive to other drugs, and to treat autoimmune diseases.

Atopic dermatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, bullous pemphigoid, Crohn’s disease, dermatomyositis/polymyositis, liver fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, oral lichen planus, pericarditis, primary biliary cirrhosis, psoriatic arthritis, therapy-resistant idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, therapy-resistant thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura, sarcoidosis, ulcerative colitis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), uveitis due to systemic disease.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Fever, chills, hair loss, rash, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, blood abnormalities such as anemia and pancytopenia, liver toxicity, muscle aches, shaking and tremors, shortness of breath, low blood pressure.

CAUTIONS
  • Chronic suppression of the immune system increases the risk of developing secondary cancers.
  • This drug may cause severe blood toxicities.
  • Use with caution if you have liver disease or decreased kidney function.
  • Some people have experienced severe nausea and vomiting accompanied by fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, increase in liver function tests. These symptoms develop within the first few weeks of therapy.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

Other immunosuppressive treatments included cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and mitoxantrone.

In a study of 23 patients with relapse-remitting MS (RRMS) combination therapy with azathioprine and interferon beta (1a) had promising results. Although trials involving the investigation of Imuran in the treatment of MS are small in sample size and have various limitations, most suggest that it reduces the relapse rate of the disease. The drug's effect on progression of disability has not been studied.
