DRUG CLASS
Drug to reduce hypercalcemia (high calcium levels)

DESCRIPTION
This drug blocks the break down of bones and promotes the production of calcium, phosphate, sodium, magnesium and potassium.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Facial flushing, nausea, diarrhea, anorexia, swelling at injection site, frequent urination, back/joint pain, nasal bleeding/crusting following intranasal administration.

CAUTIONS
  • Because allergic reactions may be a possibility, skin testing should be performed prior to starting therapy with calcitonin salmon. Inform your doctor if you are allergic to salmon protein or gelatin (used as a diluent).
  • Excessive low levels of calcium may potentially cause cramping.
  • A nasal exam should be performed prior to the initiation of therapy or after adverse events. If using the nasal spray, notify your doctor if significant nasal irritation occurs.

FDA Pregnancy Risk Category C. Excretion in breast milk is unknown. In animals, this drug has suppressed the production of breast milk. Consult your doctor.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
If using the spray for the first time, activate the pump and press the pump six times until a faint spray is emitted.
