DESCRIPTION
This drug inhibits the production of bacterial cell walls.

ORIGINAL USES (ON-LABEL)
Bacterial infections in the lower respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, bone and joint and urinary tract. Also used to prevent bacterial endocarditis (in the heart).

NEWLY DISCOVERED USES (OFF-LABEL)
Diverticulitis.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Diarrhea, stomach upset, rash.

CAUTIONS
  • Dosage may need to be reduced if you have severe kidney dysfunction.
  • Prolonged use may result in superinfection.
  • May cause colitis (inflammation of the colon tissue).
  • Notify your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to other cephalosporins or to a penicillin.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Probenecid, furosemide, aminoglycosides (such as gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin).

FOOD INTERACTIONS
Blood levels may be reduced if taken with food.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
Discard refrigerated suspension formulations of this drug after two weeks.
Not to drink alcohol or use meds with alcohol: reaction may occur.
Use yogurt or buttermilk to maintain intestinal flora, decrease diarrhea.
Take all medication prescribed for length of time ordered.
Report sore throat, bruising, bleeding, joint pain (may indicate blood dyscrasias [rare]); diarrhea with mucus, blood, may indicate pseudomembranous colitis.
