DESCRIPTION
Citalopram belongs to a class of antidepressant drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). CAUTIONS

MAO inhibitors or drugs with MAO inhibition (linezolid), amphetamines, buspirone, meperidine, nefazodone, serotonin agonists (sumatriptan), sibutramine, other SSRIs, sympathomimetics, ritonavir, tramadol, venlafaxine, loop diuretics, warfarin, aminoglutethimide, tegretol, phenytoin and rifampin, cyproheptadine.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
Combination with other SSRIs, SSNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, amphetamines, sympathomimetics, ritonavir, serotonin agonists (sumatriptan, etc.), and certain opiates carries an increased risk of serotonin syndrome. Researchers in Toronto, Canada, examined the different effects of Celexa on alcohol intake in nondepressed men and women with mild to moderate alcohol dependence. The patients received up to 12 weeks of this drug or placebo. Men receiving citalopram reduced average drinks per day by 44%, whereas women had a 27% decrease in average drinks per day. Researchers concluded that men may benefit more than women from this drug in the treatment of alcohol dependence.
