A researcher at the University of Maryland in Baltimore conducted a medical chart review of psychiatric outpatients with alcohol or substance abuse and mood disorders. It was found that some patients treated with this drug diminished their substance abuse during the period of treatment for their disorders. Of the 46 patients, 24 showed a reduction in alcohol or other substance abuse, two showed a change in their usage, and none of the patients increased usage.

Researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine evaluated 36 patients undergoing alcohol withdrawal. The patients received divalproex sodium or placebo. Also, all patients had access to oxazepam as a rescue medication in case alcohol withdrawal symptoms became unmanageable. Researchers observed that those patients on this drug had less use of oxazepam as an escape medication. They concluded that Depakote significantly affects the course of alcohol withdrawal and reduces the need for treatment with a benzodiazepine.
