DESCRIPTIONDonepezil is used to treat Alzheimer’s disease by increasing the amount of certain natural substances in the brain. Based on the efficacy seen with Aricept in Alzheimer's disease, it has also been investigated for TBIs and has been shown to improve cognitive function, particularly memory. Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio examined the effects of donepezil on short-term memory and sustained attention in patients with traumatic brain injury in a 24-week trial. Eighteen post-acute patients with TBI and cognitive impairment were randomly assigned to group A (patients in this group were given donepezil for the first 10 weeks and then a placebo for another 10 weeks) or group B (patients in group B received the preparations in the opposite order). Researchers found that donepezil significantly increased auditory and visual testing scores from the beginning of the study. In group B, there was no significant change in the testing scores between the baseline and end of the placebo phase. An intergroup comparison at the 10-week assessment showed significantly improved testing scores in group A with Aricept over group B with the placebo. Results from this study showed that donepezil increased neuropsychologic testing scores in short-term memory and sustained attention in patients with post-acute TBI.
