DESCRIPTION
Ethambutol is classified as an antibiotic drug and is typically used to treat tuberculosis (respiratory infection). It may also be used to treat Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC).

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Headache, confusion, disorientation, malaise, fever, dizziness, rash, itching, acute gout, possible hallucinations, joint pain, abdominal pain, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, various blood reactions, increase in liver function tests, peripheral nerve inflammation, optic nerve inflammation.
CAUTIONS
- Do not use if you have optic nerve inflammation.
- Stop immediately if any of the following occur: changes in vision, color blindness, or visual defects (effects normally reversible, but reversal may require up to a year). Requires regular assessment of vision during therapy.
- During long-term therapy, requires regular testing of kidney and liver function and for abnormalities of the blood.
- Not recommended for children less than 13 years old.
- Dosage should be reduced if kidney function is decreased.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Absorption is decreased when taken with aluminum salts. Avoid taking aluminum-containing antacids for at least four hours following Myambutol.
