An article in Alimentary Pharmacological Therapy from the Kawasaki Medical School in Japan reported on a study of famotidine versus
omeprazole in the treatment of bleeding peptic ulcer. They divided 400 people to take one of the two therapies, given by intravenous infusion, and monitored the duration of fasting, hospital stay, volume of transfused blood, recurrences of bleeding, and death. While bleeding recurrences were not significantly different, the average hospital stay was significantly shorter in the omeprazole group (18.4 days) than in the famotidine group (21.5 days). However there was no significant difference in the other symptoms. Researchers conclude that the two drugs are equivalent for prevention of recurrent bleeding.
