DESCRIPTION
Seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria are common conditions that can adversely affect quality of life. Histamine release plays a prominent role in the etiology of these conditions, and second-generation histamine H1-receptor antagonists are often preferred for treating symptoms. Fexofenadine, the active metabolite of the second-generation histamine H1-receptor antagonist terfenadine, is effective in reducing the sneezing; rhinorrhea; itchy nose, palate, or throat; and itchy, watery, or red eyes of seasonal allergic rhinitis and reducing the pruritus and number of wheals in patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria. Fexofenadine generally is well tolerated. It does not cause cardiotoxicity and is safe for pediatric patients as young as 6 years of age.
