DESCRIPTIONIndapamide is called a "thiazide-like" diuretic. It is one of the many drugs that have been in use for more than 20 years that continue to find new applications. Although originally developed as a drug for hypertension, its chemical actions make it useful in other areas: it inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the kidney, thus increasing excretion of sodium and water. It is also believed to reduce the sodium in the smooth muscle lining of blood vessels, promoting its loss in the urine; the salt dissipation causes the muscle to relax, one of the mechanisms in blood pressure reduction.

High blood pressure, swelling (edema) due to fluid retention in congestive heart failure.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS

An article in the Archives of Internal Medicine from researchers at Balcali Hospital in Adana, Turkey, reviewed the treatment of 20 patients with central diabetes insipidus with Lozol, which proved to be as effective as chlorpropamide.
