DESCRIPTION
Lansoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that stops the production and release of gastric acid in the stomach, belongs to a class of drugs that block the production of acid by the stomach and are used in GERD and other diseases where the stomach overproduces acid. Short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers, maintenance treatment of healed duodenal ulcers, part of H. pylori treatment regimen, treatment of gastric ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and hypersecretory (increased gastric acid secretion) conditions (such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).

CAUTIONS

In another trial, a researcher with Baylor University in Texas along with researchers from other U.S. universities examined the effects of lansoprazole and placebo for three months in 20 people with chronic laryngitis. Results from this study demonstrated that six patients (50%) in the this drug group and one patient in the placebo group had a complete response to treatment. These researchers reasoned that lansoprazole should be considered as a first-line treatment for chronic laryngitis.
