DESCRIPTIONThis drug is an opioid that slows down movements of the gut and is used in the treatment of acute diarrhoea in adults and children over four years old and chronic diarrhoea in adults only.
ORIGINAL USES (ON-LABEL)
Diarrhea (acute non-specific); chronic diarrhea (inflammatory bowel disease); reduction of volume from ileostomy; traveler's diarrhea.
POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Abdominal cramps, bloating, and rashes may occur.
CAUTIONS

Loperamide should not be taken by people with acute ulcerative colitis, antibiotic-associated colitis, paralysis of the small intestine, or abdominal distension.
Antihistamines, analgesics, opioids, sedative / hypnotics Do not mix oral sol with other sols.
FOOD INTERACTIONS
Avoid Alcohol.
HERBAL INTERACTIONS
Chamomile, hops, kava, skullcap, valerian, nutmeg.
PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING CAUTIONS
Pregnancy category B; unknown if excreted in breast milk; compatible with breast feeding.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
This medication may cause dry mouth. It’s important to drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration that may accompany diarrhea. Notify your health care provider if diarrhea persists more than 48 hr or if fever develops.
