DRUG CLASS
Electrolyte supplement (injection)

DESCRIPTION
When taken orally, magnesium promotes bowel evacuation by expanding the colon. When given by injection, magnesium decreases the level of a certain neurotransmitter in the body's motor nerve terminals and acts on the muscular tissue of the heart to strengthen the heart's performance.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Changes in blood pressure and heart rate with rapid administration. Flushing, sweating, depressed reflexes, flaccid paralysis, low temperatures, cardiac and central nervous system (CNS) depression.

CAUTIONS
  • Inform your doctor if you have heart disease or damage, kidney or liver problems, myasthenia gravis, other neuromuscular disease, or Addison's disease.
  • Requires monitoring of serum magnesium level, respiratory rate, deep tendon reflex, and kidney function.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Neuromuscular blockers (such as tubocurarine, vecuronium, succinylcholine).
