DESCRIPTION
Norethindrone acetate is a synthetic progestin used for the treatment of secondary amenorrhea and for the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding caused by hormonal imbalance in women without other underlying conditions such as fibroids or uterine cancer. Oral luteal-phase (after ovulation) progestins may help regulate bleeding patterns in irregular bleeding but are ineffective in regular dysfunctional uterine bleeding and may actually increase menstrual bleeding.

Longer regimens (days five–25 of the menstrual cycle) have been found to have similar results when compared to the levonorgestrel intrauterine system for treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding. These longer treatment regimens have been studied in randomized controlled trials, but only 30% of women reported that they would have the treatment again.

Dysmenorrhea and noncyclic pelvic pain were relieved in 92.3% and 89.2% of patients, respectively.Overall pain relief was obtained in 94.2% of women. Breakthrough bleeding, of variable severity, was the most common side effect experienced by 30 women (57.6%); however, only four women (7.7%) dropped out from this side effect. One other woman dropped out for severe breast tenderness, and three for noncyclic pelvic pain. In general, treatment was successful in 44/52 (84.5%) of women with the above symptoms. Investigators concluded that norethindrone acetate is a cost-effective alternative with relatively mild side effects in the treatment.
