DESCRIPTIONNorfloxacin belongs to the quinolone family of antibiotics. It is approved for the treatment of acute gonococcal cervicitis and urethritis, prostatitis due to E. coli, certain urinary tract infections, and acute lower genitourinary gonorrhea.

Uncomplicated urinary tract infections, prostatitis, and cystitis caused by susceptible bacteria; sexually transmitted disease caused by N. gonorrhoeae.

Traveler's diarrhea.
POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, headache.
CAUTIONS
- Report to your doctor if you experience pain, inflammation or rupture of a tendon. Rest and refrain from exercise until you see a doctor. Tendon rupture can occur during or after therapy with this drug.
- Stop the medication at the first sign of a rash.
- Prolonged use may cause superinfection.
- May aggravate symptoms of myasthenia gravis.
- Inform your doctor if serious, persistent diarrhea develops.
- May require dosage adjustment if you have kidney impairment.
- Crystalluria (crystals in urine have developed). Drink ample fluids to ensure hydration and adequate urinary output. Do not exceed recommended dose.
Inhibits CYP1A2 (strong), 3A4 (moderate). Iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, corticosteroids (increase risk of tendon rupture), antacids, electrolyte supplements, quinapril, sucralfate, certain antiarrhythmics, didanosine formulations (chewable/buffered tablets and pediatric powder for oral suspension), theophyllines, antacids, cyclosporine, cimetidine.
FOOD INTERACTIONS
Take at least one hour prior to or at least two hours after meals or ingestion of milk. Dairy products or calcium-fortified juices. Caffeine levels may be increased.
HERBAL INTERACTIONS
St. John's wort, dong quai, zinc.
PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING CAUTIONS
FDA Pregnancy Risk Category C. May be excreted in breast milk. Do not use during breast-feeding.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
Take antacids or sucralfate three to four hours after giving norfloxacin. Take entire prescription even if feeling better. Maintain adequate hydration (2 to 3 L/day of fluids) to avoid concentrated urine and crystal formation. May caused increased sensitivity to sunlight; use sun block, wear protective clothing and dark glasses. Report immediately any signs of rash, joint or back pain, difficulty breathing, easy bruising or bleeding, inflammation, or rupture of tendon.
Clinical Infectious Diseases reported on a study from the Helsinki University Hospital in Finland of the clinical efficacy of norfloxacin for treatment of traveler's diarrhea in 106 Finnish tourists vacationing in Morocco. The travelers were divided to receive either Noroxin or a placebo twice daily for three days. All symptoms disappeared sooner in those taking norfloxacin group. Most notably, the diarrhea subsided in 1.2 days in the norfloxacin group versus 3.3 days in the placebo group. Its disappearance occurred most quickly in those infected with E. coli (1 day) and Salmonella (1.1 day) and was slightly slower in those infected with Campylobacter jejuni (1.8 days). The rates in those on placebo were 3.1, 4.1, and 5.0, respectively. No significant adverse effects occurred. The investigators concluded that norfloxacin tablets was safe and effective in therapy for traveler's diarrhea.
