OVRAL IN TREATMENT OF DYSMENORRHEA
In order to determine the efficacy of oral contraceptives in the treatment of menstrual dysfunction 44 women with spasmodic dysmenorrhea, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and menorrhagia (heavy bleeding) were treated with a norgestrel-ethinyl estradiol combination oral preparation. Those patients who were bleeding heavily at the time of examination received norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol three to four times daily until the bleeding stopped and then were maintained on one daily dose along with the other patients with less serious bleeding episodes until day 21 of treatment.

All 14 women with spasmodic dysmenorrhea had complete relief of symptoms and one case of primary infertility conceived after the therapy. The dysfunctional uterine bleeding group had similar results. Endometrial biopsies in the metropathic and menorrhagic patients revealed a return to normal endometrial function. The drug was extremely well tolerated in all patients with only two patients reporting minimum side effects. Researchers concluded that oral contraceptive preparations such as norgestrel-ethinyl estradiol are highly effective in the treating of menstrual dysfunction.

OVRAL AND UTERINE BLEEDINGS
To determine the efficacy of birth control pills in the treatment of menstrual disorders, 44 patients received a norgestrel-ethinyl estradiol combination oral preparation. The drug was extremely well tolerated in all patients: only two reported minimum side effects. Oral contraceptive preparations are highly effective in the therapeutic manipulation of menstrual function.

Treatment with Ovral tablets helps women with persistent uterine bleeding. Correction of the cause of bleeding is the first consideration when providing treatment. Estrogen-progestin combinations, such as norgestrel-ethinyl estradiol helped stop bleeding and stabilize the uterine tissues. Once an acute bleeding episode is controlled, additional treatment may be needed for several months. The dose of the oral combination contraceptive will be different for the acute and the long-term management of abnormal uterine bleeding.
