DESCRIPTION
Pentoxifylline belongs to a class of drugs known as hemorrheologic agents and is used to improve blood flow through blood vessels. In sarcoidosis with lung involvement, Trental used alone or in combination with low doses of corticosteroids significantly improves respiratory function. This drug works by blocking tumor necrosis factor (proteins that activate immune cells). Its side effects include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, and stomach discomfort.

In a study, German researchers compared dexamethasone (a corticosteroid), with pentoxifylline, which improved the treatment regimens. Results showed that pentoifylline suppressed tumor-necrosis alpha release from immune cells, and blocked interleukin-10 (a product of immune cells in the body) production. In another study, patients with sarcoidosis received pentoxifylline. Of 18 patients, 11 improved, seven remained stable, and none worsened. Use of pentoxyfylline improved lung function, and researchers concluded that this drug may help to replace or reduce the need for corticosteroids for the treatment of sarcoidosis.

Used for the treatment of intermittent claudication in people with chronic occlusive arterial disease of the limbs.

CAUTIONS
