DESCRIPTION
Suppresses gastric acid secretion by blocking "acid (proton) pump" within gastric parietal cells.

ORIGINAL USES (ON-LABEL)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), severe erosive esophagitis, poorly responsive systemic GERD, pathologic hypersecretory conditions (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, systemic mastocytosis, multiple endocrine adenomas); treatment of active duodenal ulcers with or without antiinfectives for Helicobacter pylori; daytime, nighttime heartburn

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Include headache, diarrhoea, rashes, itching, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, constipation, flatulence, muscle and joint pain, chest pain, inflammation of the mouth lining, cough, and a running nose.

CAUTIONS
  • Do not take Aciphex if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine.
  • Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Increased serum levels of rabeprazole: benzodiazepines, phenytoin, clarithromycin. Decreased levels of rabeprazole: sucralfate.

FOOD INTERACTIONS
Take 30 minutes before breakfast (and if twice a day, 30 minutes before evening meal).

PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING CAUTIONS
Pregnancy category B; excretion into breast milk unknown, use caution in nursing mothers.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
  • Sustained action tablets should be swallowed whole, do not chew, crush, or split the tablets. Report severe headache, worsening of symptoms, fever, chills.
  • Report severe diarrhea, drug may have to be discontinued.
  • Diabetic patient should know hypoglycemia may occur.
  • Wear sunscreen, protective clothing to prevent burns.

    Hypersecretory conditions: PO 60 mg every day; dose may need to be adjusted prn; doses as high as 100 mg daily and 60 mg twice a day have been used.
