The American Journal of Medicine reported on a maintenance regimen of sucralfate to help reduce the relapse rate for duodenal ulcer disease.
They divided patients with recently healed duodenal ulcers to receive this drug, cimetidine or placebo.
After one year, 96 patients were examined by endoscopy (a small camera that is inserted through the mouth so a physician can see the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum).
According to researchers, ulcers had recurred in 17 of 31 Carafate patients, 19 of 32 cimetidine patients, and 28 of the placebo patients.
The investigators concluded that this medication was at least as effective as cimetidine in preventing duodenal ulcer relapse.
Further, referring to the prior remission study, the investigators noted that patients initially treated with cimetidine alone had a greater early relapse rate than those treated with Carafate alone, a combination of sucralfate and cimetidine, or an antacid alone.
