DESCRIPTIONTegaserod is an unusual drug: it is approved only for the treatment of women, but for a disease that affects both men and women. It is approved for short-term treatment in women who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with constipation. It is also used to treat women younger than 65 years of age who have chronic constipation with an unknown cause. It acts by speeding the movement of stools through the bowels so that too much fluid is not absorbed out of them, thus leaving more fluid in the stool and allowing a softer bowel movement. Zelnorm does not cure irritable bowel syndrome, and its benefits last only while the drug is being taken. During that time, tegaserod decreases not only constipation but also pain, discomfort, and bloating in the abdominal area. Symptoms recur within a week or two after you stop taking the drug.
One of the ways in which Zelnorm speeds stool through the bowel is by causing increased contractions in the intestines so that the stools cannot lag along their route. Physicians believe that such intensifying of muscular contraction can benefit gastroesophageal reflux disease by tightening the response of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Nineteen patients received tegaserod or placebo for two weeks, after which each was given no therapy for a week and then switched to the alternate therapy for two weeks. They found that tegaserod caused a more than 50% decrease in reflux after meals in these people. The benefit seemed to result from enhanced esophageal acid clearance, improved gastric acid emptying, and reduced transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxations.

CAUTIONS
- Inform your doctor if you have diarrhea, liver impairment, a history of bowel obstruction, gallbladder disease, suspected sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, or abdominal adhesions.
- Treatment should not be started in patients with diarrhea or in those who experience diarrhea frequently.
- Notify your doctor immediately if you develop severe diarrhea, or diarrhea with severe cramping, abdominal pain, or dizziness.
